Innovations in Online Learning

AIU Online, the virtual campus division of American InterContinental University, is now using podcasts to supplement learning for online degree students.

Students enrolled in the online college degree programs at AIU Online may use specially tailored multimedia content that supplements their online class materials. AIU Online has made podcast content available that the student can download and listen to whenever time is available, solving the students' dilemma of how to make the best use of downtime imposed by travel and other job and family-related activities.

AIU Online offers students in its online degree programs virtual classrooms, via the Internet, which are multimedia rich-learning environments. These virtual classrooms are designed to meet the learning preferences and needs of the university's population of adult learners. For those students who learn best by listening, there is audio content; while for others who prefer to read or interact with course materials, text and interactive course materials are available. The podcasts makes the audio content from one class session each week portable. Students simply download the audio content and listen to it whenever they have time, so they can continue learning when they are offline anytime and anywhere. For those students who learn better by listening and reading, a text of the audio content is also available for download, providing the adult learner two learning modalities - audio and visual.

Dr. Alan Drimmer, President of AIU Online, says, "because AIU online is focused on the needs of time-challenged adult learners studying online for their college degree, we are using podcasting to supplement and accelerate the learning process. Students in our online degree programs use the podcasts to add another layer in the learning experience. We have not developed them as substitute for the traditional classroom, but rather as an enhancement for the virtual classroom."

Online Degrees

It is becoming easier to earn a college degree, due to the growing number of online degrees provided by regionally accredited and respected colleges and universities. Although there has been some talk in the media about online degrees not be accepted by some employers, most employers do accept online degrees - as long as they are from an accredited college or university. (eLearningYellowPages.com offers a directory of only accredited degree and technical online programs)

A student may complete an online degree at home and/or the work place, still meeting family and work obligations. Online degrees are available for at all degree levels, from associate to doctorate.

According to Sloan Consortium's 2005 annual review, enrollment in online education programs is increasing at a rapid pace. In 2004, 2.35 million students sought degrees or training via the Internet, compared to only 1.98 million students in 2003. That's a growth rate of 18.7%, and schools are enthusiastic about continued future growth. Nearly 75% of online education providers are expecting their online enrollments to continue to increase, and more than 56% of the schools offering online education consider it a "critical long-term strategy."

Today top tier universities and colleges offer the same degree programs online; Associate, Bachelor, Master and Doctorate, as they are offering to on-campus students. Usually, online schools offer the same curricula, student services and benefits to degree seekers.

It's easier than ever to take advantage of furthering your education by enrolling in an online degree or diploma program. When compared to traditional delivery of education, online schools are becoming more and more competitive. The Sloan report indicated a slightly higher percentage of core faculty teaching in online programs than in the face-to-face classes in more traditional delivery. With these high quality educational opportunities available online, more people are taking the opportunity to advance their career options by furthering their education.

A recent U.S. Census Bureau report indicates that those persons holding bachelor’s degree earn $22,909 more annually thatn those with only a high school diploma. The average annual salary for a four-year college graduate is $51,554 compared with $28,645 for those with high school diplomas, while high school dropouts earn an average of $19,169. The average annual salary for persons with master’s degrees and above is $78,093. Individuals in some professional and technical fields may earn much higher average annual salaries.

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics announced what are expected to be the 10 fastest-growing jobs for the next 10 years, as well as their projected average annual salaries:

Medical Assistants ($23,940)

Network Systems and Data Communication Analysts ($58,420)

Physician Assistants (64,670)

Social and Human Service Assistants ($23,370)

Home and Health Aides ($20,670)

More Companies Using E-Learning for Training

More and more companies are turning to e-learning as a cost effective and convenient method of training employees. E-learning is becoming more popular because it enables employees and their managers to schedule courses around their day.

Rather than hiring a corporate trainer to teach about decision making, for example, employees access the training that they need when it is convenient for them and for the company. While e-learning won't replace conventional classroom training, it is a viable alternative for many types of training and development. Rather than scheduling training seminars and events, virtual training allows companies to continue operations while allowing employees to access courses during the regular business day, according to Dubai-based Xpert Learning director Paul Gledhill. This flexibility is driving the growing popularity of e-learning based training, expecially for multinational companies.

Top tier schools such as the University of Notre Dame and University of Phoenix Online, offer excellent executive training and development courses.

The University of Notre Dame. offers an online Executive Certificate in Negotiation, delivered in three separate and powerful 8-week courses in business negotiation, each containing up to 16 hours of streaming video presentations, independent exercises, and exam, allowing the student to master the art of negotiation online.

The University of Phoenix Online offers professional career development courses in subjects such as Marketing. These Marketing courses generally take about 5 to 6 weeks each to complete. A few of the courses offered include: Buyer Behavior; Integrated Marketing Commmunications; International Marketing; and Product Development.
