Locksmiths repair and open locks; make keys; change locks and safe combinations; and install and repair safes.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Handbook, 2007, the future outlook for locksmiths over the next 10 years is good. 

  • 2004 employment of locksmiths: 28,000

  • Projected 2004-14 employment change: About as fast as average for all occupations

  • Most significant source of postsecondary education or training: Some career training from vocational school, then on-the-job training
